Category: accessible Devices
Hi all, does anyone know of any accessable e readers similar to the soney or amizon e-reader? are they much good,or is the i pad just as good given I could use their i books ap and any audiobooks onit.
hmm for the pc not sure but sense you brought up an Ipad, Ibooks is accessible. Heck you could just save yourself money and by a 5th gen Ipod. I would bring up android because of the book readers we have but I ant looking for a fight.
the samsung galaxy player runs android 4.4 and we have a lot of accessible e-book readers along with music players that can play audeo books. audable is accessible too. Again just my two sence in this board.
NOt looking for a fight just giving two sides to a person who might just want choice.
Choice is always good!!!
Starfly, you may already know, but I wonder if the Nook ebook reader is accessible on Android now, yes?
They just made it accessible on iOS, so I wouldn't be surprised to find out Android also has this.
Kindle is still not usable on iOS: you can order and download books but you cannot read them.
Amazon is the only player now to not have an accessible player.
If Nook isn't ready on Android yet I encourage Android users to write to Barnes and Noble or write to @NookBN on Twitter, make your voice heard. You're only benefitting their market by doing so, since it will enable you to buy books from there also.
And yes the native iBooks application does work well with the VoiceOver, and the new Nook app is said to be fashioned after the iBooks support from an accessibility standpoint. So, I imagine they will do the same, or have done the same, to Android support.
indeed choice is good, are these expensive?
For Androy, you can always go with Nexus 7, its around $259 and you get an 7inch tab with 16gb space, or $299 with 32gb space.
For Totally accessible EReader however, you can go for IPad mini or Ipod 5th Gen. Ipad mini starting price is $329 and Ipod 5th Gen starting price is around $299 or there about. the option is yours, and the choice is yours. unfortunately, you can't get a strate forward EReader that is accessible. You might be okay if you have partial vision, enough to read with manifying fons, but at this stage, your best bet for fully accessible reader will be IBooks. You can also use Audible on either the Androy or IOS devices. However, IBooks only available for IOS
coffs, no not true about the e-book reader, um... where do I start? Ever heard of darwin reader, Ideal e-reader and even the googleplay books is accessible. Sise, back to leo, no I did not know about Barns and Noble making their app acessible for IOS. Its about time one of the mager book distributers get with the program!. Well now to right barns and noble to see what I can do, I just might see if the eyes-free list members will help me throw some weight around to get there attention. First I will go email someone over at Barns and noble. Thanks Leo for that tid bit about barns and noble. again I am not looking for a fight when it comes to android and IOS, just hate when "coffs" certain people put miss information out here on the boards about android's accessibility.
If you would like I will do a podcast on a e-book reader if that is helpful, just let me know :), I love doing podcasts.
Um, i didn't said that google play books is not accessible did i? i simply point out that, if she's looking for something that is straight forward, and totally avaiable and accessible out of the box, IBooks will be her best choice. Don't forget, there're also some ereader software you can get for the computer. And some of them is "quite" accessible too
Eehm, Android 4.4, that is a post from the future, seeing as Jellybean 4.2 updates are tiehr coming or expected early next year. I surse hope accessibility will be even better by v4.4.
For the PC there's the adobe Digital Editions, runs nicely with screen readers on Windows, and it is also free, and and works with some books that have even been locked with Adobe's technology.
iBooks does not play epub2 or epub3 books, it uses a proprietary version of epub with some significant formatting changes, so it does matter what kind of e-books you want to read what hardware does the best job of it.
Audible has players on pretty much any platform I]ve seen, the Amazon Kindle format is simply inaccessible, except on PC with their Kindle software, even there we have some restrictions and limitations.
um... darwin is accessible out of the box :), I love people who want to dispute me and end up looking silly. Oh, darwin reader also intagrates with bookshare, Learning allie is soon to come in the next update. I for got it even has libra vox's library as well for book content. :), hmm accessible out of the box if you ask me. Yes jelly bean has made a huge leap forward, go check my boards. :), sounds like a podcast on some e-book readers is in order soon :).
I for got too, darwin reader even works for gingerbred as well for those who are still running this OS.
Oh yes, adobe Digital Editions, one of the better EReader software for Windows for sure. I used it all the time. :)
Are there any e-book readers available for the Mac? can't afford Docu-Scan Plus yet, and I'm not even sure if that program reads e-books, but it certainly does a whole bunch of stuff I will either need or find useful when I get back to school.
wow! i sure started something? the reason i've asked is my partner bought me a soney e reader for christmas and we discovered it's not accessable at all. Some of these prices, how much roughly are they in gbp? yah a podcast sounds good. do some of these things have headphone capability?
I will happly do a podcast on some e-book readers just as soon as I pull myself away from my new mac book pro. Its got my attention at this time because I am new to OS.
victor reader stream is tecnicly considdered an e reader so I'd say these do exist. last year they released it's desctop brother the stratus.
ahhhh! of course! a daisy player! i know how much they are to buy, never thought of that. mind you, i know theyr'e not cheap to buy.
me too! and you have to pay an extra $50 or so to get an addon to play mp4 files. I think that makes sence though considdering the whole coppyright controvercy thing.
If you want to read standard off-the-shelf ebooks, not just Bookshare, and if you want to read using Braille you will need an Android or iOS device, not a proprietary reader. If you are OK with just audio output maybe some of the others but if you think you will ever do Braille Android or iOS is what you'll need to use.
Also if you do have an old PAC Mate lying around, the old eReader application (eReader.com) will let you read books also, the ePub formats.
I was on apple this, found that there is a e-reader for the mac :). It was a paid app so could not test it out.
I looked briefly at the darwin on line last night. so let me get this right, it can go on an android phone or tablett type device? well an e reader that reads e books and/or audio books would be handy. are any of these, minus the i pad or phone or pod available commercially through mainstream shops?
dunno. I'm switching to an Iphone anyway.
well i know the i pad is. But these android based ones, are they?
KG, if you mean android devices, definitely, Amazon surely has the Nexus 7.
and the braille+18, an android based phone with a firmware based on the original braille+ mobile manager. also the braille wizard, by nls. I don't have any of those, though (when we were swiching survice providers I once considered a braille wizard.)
What about Kindle App for IOS! I use it all the time and you even can send there your personal documents.
It is the app I fell in love lately! For me it is wonderful! And now, totally accessible and really nice for using with braille displays as well!
I don't use kindle. I feel no need for it as I have a victor stream.
Hi Faial,
I love the Kindle app for iOS. I like it over the Kindle Keyboard because of the ability to use Braille or the iPhone's text-to-speech instead of the horrendous voice built into the KK, not to mention the ability to read books where text-to-speech has not been enabled.
Kindel for IOS is really cool. however, for some reason, i still prefer IBooks the best. Although i do understand that there're more book choice on Kindel rthan on IBooks.
Both with braille display works wonders.
I also have a Victor Reader Stream new generation but man, I hate the portuguese voice!
The portuguese voice on IOS is much nicer for me.
Allthough I understand why at Humanware they mooved to Acapela because the majority of their voices are great but what a bad luck, portuguese one is awful!
About the Kindle App, to be honest I use it because it was the first app I heard about reading when it became accessible.
I never tried Ibooks because the kindle app worked so well for me that I didn't need something else. But what are the diffrences? Got curious!
I used ibooks just for the iphone user guide. the reader I use is voicedream which uses the same voice as the new streem.
darwin reader is found on the play store and it can read books from book share, libra vox and text files loaded on a Micro sd card. I hope this helps any android user who wants to read books on there device.
IBooks and Kindel are very similar. They are both great book apps.you get different books from different apps thru different publishers. For example, there are some titles available exclusively thru IBooks, or some thru Amazon Kindel. Ibooks pretty much control by Apple, and Kindel by Amazon. I guess, in more of a common setting is like two different bookstore own and run by different people. 75% of their content could be the same with slitely different pricing on them, and 25% of their stuff are exclusive to their own customers. For example, i found that same book with same publisher, ibooks usually about 20% cheaper than Amazon. They both have some exclusive indi (independent) publishers and authors that use one system or another.
Have you heard about ambling books?
